They are more alike than you think
IELTS, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT all assess the four skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking — and all are accepted by thousands of institutions and immigration authorities. The right choice usually comes down to format comfort, results speed and where you are applying.
Format and scoring
IELTS offers a human examiner for Speaking (paper or computer-delivered), scored in half-bands from 0 to 9. PTE Academic is fully computer-based and AI-scored, often with very fast results. TOEFL iBT is internet-based with integrated tasks that combine skills, scored out of 120.
If you are comfortable speaking to a person, IELTS suits you. If you prefer a screen and a microphone and want quick results, PTE is worth a serious look.
