Practical, examiner-informed techniques to lift your IELTS Speaking score — fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
Speak in extended answers
A one-line answer caps your fluency score. Practise extending every response with a reason and an example. The examiner is listening for sustained, coherent speech — not perfect, rehearsed paragraphs.
Use precise, natural vocabulary
Band 7 rewards less common vocabulary used accurately — not memorised idioms forced into place. Build topic word-banks (work, study, technology, environment) and use them naturally.
Show a range of grammar
Mix simple and complex sentences. Use conditionals, relative clauses and a range of tenses where they fit. Accuracy matters, but so does range — both are in the descriptors.
Be intelligible, not 'accent-free'
You do not need a British or American accent. You need clear pronunciation, sentence stress and natural intonation. Our examiner-led feedback pinpoints exactly what is holding your clarity back.
